IRUDLab Launches Research Survey and Discussion Forum to Strengthen International Relations Research Culture

Semarang, 15 September 2023 – IRUDLab (International Relations Universitas Diponegoro Laboratory), a laboratory for research and studies development in the Department of International Relations UNDIP, officially launched its first series of activities for the academic community during the August–September 2023 period. With a strong vision to become a sustainable research and development hub for International Relations students—particularly in the area of international cooperation, transnational issues, and international crimes—IRUDLab aims to nurture research productivity and create inclusive collaborative spaces for academic exploration.

As an initial step to map student research interests, IRUDLab conducted a Research Cluster Interest Survey from 8 to 14 August 2023. The survey was designed to capture the academic inclinations of International Relations UNDIP students, aligning with the department’s core concentrations.

The results revealed significant interest in pressing global issues, in which 57% of students expressed strong interest in Crimes Against Humanity studies, 51% highlighted a focus on Human Rights in International Relations, and 46% demonstrated enthusiasm for research on Cybercrime. This result reflects a growing awareness among IR UNDIP students of contemporary transnational challenges and underscores the urgency of strengthening analytical frameworks on humanitarian law, rights protection, and global digital security.

As a direct follow-up, IRUDLab organized its first community gathering, IRUDLab Discussion: Everyone’s Study Interest, on 1 September 2023. This event marked the laboratory’s debut forum for open dialogue, designed as an informal yet substantive platform for students to share ideas, exchange perspectives, and align potential collaborative research directions. The discussion was moderated by Maula Hudaya, S.Hub.Int., M.A., a lecturer in the Department of International Relations UNDIP. With his expertise, the forum successfully encouraged participants to voice their aspirations and explore thematic synergies across diverse research areas.

Through these two initial programs, IRUDLab has demonstrated its commitment to cultivating a strong and inclusive research culture within the academic community of International Relations UNDIP. By listening to students’ aspirations and creating spaces for discussion, IRUDLab lays the groundwork for future collaborative research projects and academic contributions in the fields of international cooperation and transnational issues.

IRUDLab will continue to facilitate research development, collaborative events, and explorative studies to ensure that UNDIP International Relations students are well-prepared to contribute to scholarly debates and real-world problem-solving at both the national and global levels.
